Major Changes to Amex Business Gold

On February 1, Amex introduced significant changes coming to the Business Gold card, its multipliers, and the benefits the card offers. These changes may be helpful to some, but also detrimental to others, and we want to make sure any cardholders of the Business Gold are still getting maximum value.

REMOVED Category Multipliers

  • Airfare

  • Shipping

With these changes, the Amex Business Gold now earns 4x points on two of the following categories, determined by how much is spent on each card statement:

  • Advertising (online, TV, radio)

  • Electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers

  • Dining

  • Gasoline

  • Transit

  • Cell phone bills

New Monthly Credits

  • $20 in statement credits for purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, or Office Supply Stores

  • $12.95 towards a Walmart+ membership

Airline Redemption Bonus Removal

Prior to February 1, the Amex Business Gold offered a 25% rebate when redeeming Amex Membership Rewards on flights in premium cabins. This feature has now been removed. If you have a Business Platinum, you won’t notice any negative impact (since that card is keeping its 35% rebate on premium cabin bookings). But if you don’t have a Business Platinum, this change could severely reduce the value of your points when it comes time to make a booking.

Increased Annual Fee

The annual fee on the Amex Business Gold has increased to $375 per year, up from $295

These updates are significant, especially for any members who were utilizing their Amex Business Gold for Airfare or Shipping. If you were using this card for either category or if you do not have a Business Platinum in tandem with this card, reach out to the Wealth Team to discuss a new strategy to make sure you don’t lose value in light of these changes.
